Before the waste:

The easiest way to reduce our ecological foot print (the amount of hurt we do to the planet) is to not have waste in the first place. The Kenyan government banned plastic bags some years ago and that is an excellent first step but we can also do some small things that can make a difference. Start and think about buying in the supermarket products with no plastic wrapping and if they all have, privilege those who use as little as possible. Think of reusing rather than throwing away and rebuying, it will also in the end be cheaper for you.

Waste collection:

In order to not to find waste everywhere in the streets and in the rivers we need to throw our waste in bins. Keep trash on you until you find a bin or are home. One of our company missions is to advocate to official instance the placement of multiple (recycle) bins to enhance the collection and kick off the recycling.
One essential part of this is to educate our children in different way than we were educated (or lacked education). Therefore parents and schools play an essential role in the awareness of a whole generation to the need of proper waste collection and recycling.

Sorting:

Ideally we need to sort as much as possible. Sorting will allow us to efficiently recycle. Without proper sorting recycling is nearly impossible. What can be sorted separately
  • Plastic is the most polluting domestic material on earth
  • Glass needs to be water cleaned before sorting.
  • Paper and carton board. Needs to be clean, extremely filthy paper cannot be recycled
  • Greens, both from kitchen or garden.
  • Stones, bricks, tiles, plaster boards (Gyproc)
  • Metal
  • Wood
